Located directly east of Port of Spain, the town of Sangre Grande is the economic hub of northeastern Trinidad and is a good base for visiting nearby attractions in the region by the same name. It is a particularly idyllic destination for nature lovers, as it has ample opportunities to hike, see howler monkeys in the wild, or do a bit of birdwatching.
While Sangre Grande is an urban locale, you won’t need to head far to experience the natural beauty of the island. The town is just east of Aripo Savannas, where birders come to spot all sorts of avian species, including savanna hawks and red-bellied macaws. North of Aripo, the Hollis Reservoir is a great place for hiking and wildlife viewing, while Matura Bay is the place to go if you want to take an eco-tour to see endangered leatherback turtles.

If you plan to visit Matura Bay during the turtle nesting season, you’ll need to obtain a permit from the Forestry Division or join a tour.
Sangre Grande is a 50-minute drive from Port of Spain. If you don’t have a rental car or want to save money, you can also take a bus or a maxi taxi (a type of shared taxi or minibus) between the two destinations. Note that both options can take considerably longer as they often stop to pick people up and drop them off along the way.
The best time to visit Sangre Grande and the surrounding region is during the dry season, from January through May. If you plan to visit Matura Bay to see turtles, you’ll need to come between March and August, during nesting season, but be prepared for heavy rainfall during the summer months.
If you want to see leatherback turtles and their hatchlings, Matura Bay is the place to do it. Nighttime excursions led by local guides, authorized by the nonprofit conservation group Turtle Village Trust, bring small groups of visitors out to see the majestic creatures. Just be aware that only 100 visitors at any one time are allowed on the beach during this period, so it’s crucial to book early.
